Munin Barua: The Assamese film industry is remembering National Award-winning Assamese filmmaker Munin Barua on his birthday. Nayak, Dinabandhoo, Barood, Priyar Priyo, and other blockbuster Assamese films have been directed by him. Dinabandhoo, his 2004 release, earned him a National Award in the category of Best Feature Film in Assamese. His work in Nayak also earned him accolades, as he received the State Award for Best Director for the film.
The commercially most successful Assamese filmmaker, Munin Barua, passed away in 2018 at his residence here. He was 72. Barua had been suffering from serious health issues for the past year.

Assamese writer, musician, and filmmaker. In Nalin Duara’s Mamata (1973), he was introduced as an instrumentalist but later changed roles to become a scenarist. His scripts established him as a major purveyor of middle-budget, purposefully middle-of-the-road, and non-sensationalist socials in the 1980s. In addition to his own films, Siva Prasad Thakur scripted Bowari (1982), Ghar Sansar (1983), Son Moina (1984), and Mon Mandir (1985). (1985). Ae Desh Mor Desh (1986), Bhai Bhai (1988), and Sewali (1990) were also written by him (1989).
Born in the Assam district of Golaghat in 1947, Barua began his career as a scriptwriter and assistant director in the 1970s, working on films such as Ghar Sansar, Sonmoina, and Bowari, among others.
With the 1987 film Pratima, he made his directorial debut alongside Nipon Goswami. He then directed television serials such as Papu Nikur Xongbad and a telefilm titled Rudra. Barua, also known as Bhaimon Da, wrote scripts for at least 21 films during his career.
Munin, also known as Bhaimon da, was born in 1947 in Khumtai, Golaghat district, Assam. He began his career as a film director in 1987 with the film Pratima. In the 1970s, he worked as a scriptwriter and assistant director. Munin wrote the screenplays for 21 films, including Bowari, Ghar-Sansar, Mon-Mandir, and Sewali, Daag. In 2017, the man who is said to have revolutionised the Assamese film industry received the Prag Cine Awards Life Time Achievement Award for his contributions to the Assamese film industry.
