The Horse from Heaven (Mur Ghurar Duronto Goti) directed by Assam’s Maharishi Tuhin Kashyap, won the best short film award at the VGIK Film Festival 2022 in Moscow. According to its director, Maharshi Tuhin Kashyap, the 15-minute Assamese film ‘Mur Ghurar Duronto Goti’ (The Horse From Heaven) was qualified as an entry for the Oscar Awards in the short film fiction category.

The story follows a man who believes he has the fastest horse in the world and wants it to win all of the city’s races, but what he actually has is a donkey. “Now that we’ve qualified for the entry, it’s a dream come true,” said the 27-year-old director.

The film was created as a student project at Kolkata’s Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) and recently won best film at the Bengaluru International Short Film Festival (BISFF), an Oscar-qualifying film festival.

The film’s main crew is currently final year SRFTI students, and the film was shot mostly on campus and in the institute’s studio, with some parts shot on the outskirts of Kolkata.

In contrast to feature films, sending a short film to the Oscars requires winning a qualified award at an Oscar-qualifying film festival. BISFF is India’s only festival qualified to send its winner to the Oscars in the Short Film Fiction category in both the International and Indian competition sections.
