Earlier this year, in a letter to his counterparts, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma requested that a chapter on Ahom army general Lachit Borphukan be included in the curriculum of educational institutions across India.
Mahavir Lachit Barphukan was an iconic warrior who had fought for his motherland and dealt a devastating blow to the Mughals.

Despite being a shining example of patriotism, Borphukan is relatively unknown to the general public.
On November 24, 1966, Lachit Borphukon was born in Charaideo, the first capital of the Ahom kings. He was well-known for his leadership during the battle of Saraighat in 1671, which resulted in the defeat of the Mughal army and a halt to their advance into the region.
In March 2022 President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the year-long celebration of the 400th birth anniversary of Lachit Borphukan, commander of the Ahom forces and an icon of Assamese nationalism, on Friday during a three-day visit to Assam. He also laid the foundation stone for the Alaboi war memorial, a memorial to soldiers who fought and were defeated by the Mughals at Alaboi two years before Lachit’s decisive victory at Saraighat in 1671.
