Zubeen Garg was born on November 18, 1971, in Tura, to Mohini Borthakur, better known as Kapil Thakur, and Ily Borthakur. His parents named him after the well-known composer Zubin Mehta.

He primarily works and sings in the Assamese, Bengali, and Hindi film and music industries, but he has also sung in Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Kannada, Malayalam, Nepali, and English songs.
