Assam Election: Assam’s delimitation of the Constituencies process has been declared.
The Election Commission of India has announced that the constituency will be rescheduled.
The Lok Sabha and assembly elections will be rescheduled.

The procedure will begin on January 1, 2023. The constituency will be rescheduled based on the 2001 census results.

After 14 years of delay, Assam has written to the Centre, stating that the state’s law and order situation does not allow the Election Commission (EC) to carry out the delimitation exercise to redraw the boundaries of its parliamentary and assembly constituencies.

In July, the Supreme Court issued a notice for reply to the Centre, the Election Commission, and the state governments of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, and Nagaland on a petition seeking a directive to conduct delimitation of assembly and parliamentary constituencies in these four Northeastern states.

Meanwhile, the upcoming Lok Sabha and assembly elections will take place in newly determined constituencies. The formation of new administrative units in Assam will be restricted until the rescheduling is completed. This ban has been imposed by the Election Commission.

The Commission is led by Chief Election Commissioner Shri Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioners Shri Anup Chandra Pandey and Shri Arun Goel.

The Commission will design and finalize its own guidelines & methodology for the purpose of delimiting the constituencies. During the delimitation exercise, the Commission will keep in mind the physical features, existing boundaries of administrative units, facility of communication, public convenience and as far as practicable, the constituencies will be kept as geographically compact area.

Once a draft proposal of delimitation of constituencies in the State of Assam is finalized by the Commission, it shall be published in the Central and State Gazettes for inviting suggestions/objections from the general public.   In this regard, a Notice will also be published in two vernacular newspapers of the State specifying the date and venue for public sittings to be held in the State.
