Assam: Papon Turns Filmmaker, Announces Two Films Based On Northeast

Singer Papon is now a filmmaker, working on two films in Northeast India at the same time. Papon has been working on two films for the past four years: ‘The Land of the Sacred Beats’ and ‘The Mystical Brahmaputra – A Musical Story.’

When asked about the films, Papon stated: “Everyone knows how much I adore India, particularly the Northeast. I feel obligated to introduce the Northeast to the rest of the world.”

“Making films like this is a life-changing experience. For years, we’ve been travelling for research and filming. I hope that by making this film, we can not only promote tourism and culture, but also its beautiful stories.”

As Assam’s Cultural Ambassador, he was invited to the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. Papon’s production teasers were unveiled at the India Pavilion at the March du Film to celebrate Assamese cinema.

Papon produces the films, which are directed by Parasher Baruah. The duo has travelled the length and breadth of the Northeast in order to document its diversity, livelihood, crafts, arts, and stories.

Papon has been working on The Land of the Sacred Beats and The Mystical Brahmaputra – A Musical Story as a producer for four years. The former is based on the 550-year-old Assamese traditional classical music of Vaishnava Saint Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev, and the latter is a tribute to the Brahmaputra and the multicultural coexistence of the music, art, and culture of the tribes and communities who have settled along its banks. These upcoming films, directed by Parasher Baruah, capture the diversity of Assam’s music, art, craft, livelihood, and stories.

Popular Assam singer Angarag Papon Mahanta, popularly known as Papon is celebrated his 47th birthday on 24th November. Angaraag Papon Mahanta, born on November 24, 1975, to Assam’s legendary singer-couple Khagen Mahanta and Archana Mahanta, has carved a niche for himself in Bollywood with his soulful voice. Papon has many popular songs to his credit, including Assamese and Hindi.

He is the lead singer and bandleader of ‘The East India Company.’ Papon has learned to play a variety of instruments and can sing in a variety of styles.
Papon began his musical career at the age of 13 with the Assamese song “Gaantu je gaai asila” from the album “Aamiu Gao Gaan.” The song was written as a duet with Dr Lima Das.
