Assam Meghalaya Border: Following last week’s violence in Mukroh, which resulted in the deaths of six people, the Meghalaya government decided on Monday to establish border outposts in sensitive areas along the inter-state border, according to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.
The Chief Minister made the announcement after chairing an all-party meeting attended by local MLAs from Jaintia Hills, where they were briefed on actions taken and the state government’s future course of action in the aftermath of the Mukroh firing incident, in which five local villagers and an Assam forest guard were killed.

“Necessary steps will be taken to make border residents safe and secure,” he said. Sangma condemned the shooting at Mukroh and observed a two-minute silence to remember the dead. “The Mukroh firing incident is a personal loss to the state of Meghalaya,” he added. I have urged all political leaders to work together to restore normalcy and prevent further violence in the state.” The Chief Minister also stated that the police have opened an investigation into those who were involved in an assault and intimidation inside the Shillong Civil Hospital last week.

In view of improving the law & order situation in Meghalaya, Assam police have lifted the restrictions on vehicular movement and have been allowing all vehicles to travel to Meghalaya. “We have allowed all vehicles to enter Meghalaya,” said Sudhakar Singh, DCP, Guwahati city.
Assam vehicles can now travel to Meghalaya. People from Assam have been barred or advised not to travel to Meghalaya since the day of the violence. Meghalaya’s situation is now under control.

On November 22, Assam Guards killed five local Khasi tribals in Mukroh, a territory on the Assam-Meghalaya border that the Chief Minister of Meghalaya claimed was under his jurisdiction. Locals in Meghalaya have been staging protests and demonstrations since then. Protests were held across the state. Several attacks on vehicles with Assam license plates have been reported.
