Assam Map with District (অসমৰ মানচিত্ৰ): Assam is divided into 31 districts, each of which has its own culture, tradition, economy, and tourist attractions. Most recently, in December 2022, the total number of districts decreased from 33 to 31 due to the merging of Biswanath with Sonitpur and Hojai with Nagaon. The districts are distributed throughout the state and differ in geographical features such as hills, plains, and valleys.

How Many Districts in Assam

As of 2023, Assam has 31 existing districts. The overall number of districts in the state was 35 last year. However, on December 31, 2022, the Assam Cabinet approved the consolidation of four newly constituted Assam districts into four existing ones, bringing the state’s total number of districts to 31.

The Assam Cabinet announced the merger of four new districts in Assam into four existing ones by December 31, 2022. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the state’s Chief Minister, leads the Assam Cabinet. Following the merger, the overall number of new districts in the state decreased from 34 to 31. The following Assam districts were combined in 2022:

  • Tamulpur with Baksa
  • Hojai with Nagaon
  • Bajali with Barpeta
  • Biswanath with Sonitpur

History of Assam Districts

  1. Assam has thirteen districts when India attained independence in 1947.
  2. North Cachar Hills and United Mikir districts were formed in November 1951 from Golaghat, Nagaon, Cachar, Jayantia, and Naga Hills districts.
  3. Sonitpur district in Assam was formed from Darrang in 1983; Barpeta district was formed from Kamrup; Jorhat district was formed from Sibsagar; Karimganj district was formed from Cachar; and Dhubri and Kokrajhar districts were formed from Goalpara.
  4. Kamrup Metropolitan District was established in February 2003.
  5. On Assam’s Independence Day in 2015, Tarun Gogoi, the state’s then-chief minister, announced the creation of five new districts. This increased the state’s total number of districts from 27 to 32.
  6. On January 26, 2016, two new districts were announced, but on October 7, 2016, the status of two existing Assam districts was removed.
  7. By August 2020, Assam had 34 districts, but by December 2022, four districts had been combined into four additional districts. The number of districts in the state is now 31.
