On Saturday, Assam police reported that a faculty member at IIT Guwahati was found dead in his quarters on the institute’s campus. The deceased has been identified as Dr. Sameer Kamal (47), a mathematics professor at IIT Guwahati in Assam.

According to preliminary investigations, the death of the IIT Guwahati faculty in Assam appears to be a suicide.

According to a police officer, a preliminary investigation revealed that the 47-year-old assistant professor from the IITG’s mathematics department, Sameer Kamal, committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan.

“He was last seen about three or four days ago. He was the quiet type who kept to himself most of the time. To get his body down, we (police) had to break open the door to his quarters, which was locked from the inside and in the presence of a magistrate. “It appears to be a suicide,” said the officer.

Kamal worked at the institute for about ten years and was survived by his mother and brother.

“They have been notified,” the officer said.

This is the third suspected suicide case at IITG since September 16, when a 22-year-old design department student was discovered hanging in his room. He was from Kerala.

On October 9, a 20-year-old former IIT Guwahati student was discovered hanging in one of the hostel buildings after being asked to “vacate” his hostel room in July-August.

He was from the state of Andhra Pradesh.

In addition to the three suspected suicides, a PhD student from Odisha was discovered dead in his hostel bed in January of this year.

On Saturday, the IITG issued a two-paragraph statement with no information about the deceased faculty. According to the statement, “the body of a man was discovered in one of the residences at IIT Guwahati…. It has been identified as an institute faculty member. The institute is attempting to make contact with the deceased’s family.”
