The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced that the much-discussed bridge connecting Majuli with Jorhat over the Brahmaputra River will see significant progress before the upcoming monsoon season.

Addressing the media in Majuli, CM Sarma mentioned that the bridge construction is progressing smoothly. He stressed that he has directed both the department and contractors to ensure significant progress before the onset of next year’s monsoons.

CM Sarma stated, “We aim to attain a 35 percent completion status for the bridge. Seventy-two wells are required, and apart from two, construction is underway for the remaining wells. Casting air work is in progress on both sides”.

“Anticipating further advancements in bridge construction before the monsoons, I have instructed both the department and our contractors to ensure significant progress before the onset of the flood seasons”, he added.

CM Sarma added that although the goal is to finish the bridge by 2026, the timeline for completion may extend beyond that depending on the progress of the ongoing work.

CM Sarma conveyed his belief that the completion of the bridge before 2026 should be a goal, emphasizing the ongoing efforts over the Brahmaputra. Acknowledging challenges faced by locals and labour-related issues last year, he noted the current progress.

He mentioned that the completion could be in 2026 or slightly later, emphasizing flexibility and stating that 2026 should not be considered a rigid deadline.

The construction of a 6.8-km two-lane bridge, along with approach roads connecting Majuli (Kamalabari) and Jorhat (Nimati Ghat), is underway with a budget of Rs 925.47 crore. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the bridge’s foundation stone on this day two years ago.

Anticipating a substantial improvement in connectivity in the upper Assam region, the bridge is expected to link the world’s largest river island, Majuli, with the mainland.
