Himanta Biswa Sarma’s security has been upgraded, with Sarma now falling under the Z+ category (All India). According to officials, the security has been upgraded from Z category CRPF (northeast) to Z+ category (all India).
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s security arrangements were reviewed “in consultation with the Central Security Agency.” “It has been decided to upgrade his current CRPF security cover in the North East region to Z+ category on an all-India basis,” the statement continued.

According to the ‘Z+’ category security protocol, the Assam CM will be accompanied by over 50 CRPF commandos whenever he travels within the country. The union home ministry has asked the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), the country’s largest Central Armed Police Force, to assist.

In 2017, the CRPF assigned Sarma a security category of ‘Z.’ Sarma had previously received ‘Z’ category security within the state under previous security arrangements.

VIP security covers are divided into several categories: X, Y, Y+, Z, Z+. The Special Protection Group (SPG) is the prime minister’s highest level of security.
Z security:
This security ring has 55 personnel, including CRPF commandos, who guard the protectee 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Additional protection with National Security Guard (NSG) commandos is also provided if the need is felt based on intelligence inputs.
While Z+ is the highest level of protection, the country’s most powerful people, including current and former prime ministers, receive additional SPG coverage.
The security category is divided into five groups and assigned to an individual. There are X, Y, Z, Z+, SPG, and other security classifications available.
VIPs and VVIPs, athletes, entertainers, and other high-profile or political figures can all benefit from such security.
