Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday, while signing an MoU with Bright Star Investments Pvt Ltd for infrastructure development of the second medical college in Guwahati, that Assam will have 24 medical colleges within the next five years, greatly improving the availability of doctors and healthcare in the state.
According to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Assam government plans to build 24 medical colleges over the next five years to improve healthcare and the availability of doctors.

The state currently has nine medical colleges, with plans to establish 15 more. Construction on five of these, in Golaghat, Bongaigaon, Marigaon, Tamulpur, and Dhemaji, is set to begin in November.
“When the proposed medical colleges are completed, the State will have 2,700 MBBS seats, significantly increasing the opportunity for medical education,” Mr. Sarma said after signing an agreement with a Mumbai-based firm to develop the academic blocks of Guwahati’s second medical college.
In addition to the nine existing medical colleges, the government has already taken steps to establish 15 new ones. Seven of the 15 new medical colleges are being built in Nalbari, Nagaon, Kokrajhar, Tinsukia, Charaideo, and Biswanath Chariali, with the second being built in Guwahati.
Sarma stated that the government will begin construction of five more medical colleges this month in Golaghat, Bongaigaon, Marigaon, Tamulpur, and Dhemaji, while work on three more medical colleges in Sivasagar, Karimganj, and Goalpara will begin soon.
“Since then (1960), the state’s population has grown exponentially, as has the number of students aspiring to pursue medical education.” “A second medical college in Guwahati and elsewhere in Assam has thus long been felt to be a long-felt need,” said the Chief Minister.
The proposed Pragjyotishpur Medical College and Hospital, Guwahati’s second medical college, will cost nearly Rs 1,000 crore to build.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on the occasion, “The session of the new medical college in Guwahati will begin in 2024.”
“Within the next five years, there will be 24 medical colleges in the state, and after all of the medical colleges are built, there will be 2,700 MBBS seats,” he added.
Bright Start Investments Pvt. Limited will make a Rs. 150 crore investment in the medical college.
“The project is being implemented at a total cost of Rs 998.30 crore over a 20-acre area,” Sarma was quoted as saying by PTI. According to the Chief Minister, the new medical college will have two campuses, one in Panbazar and one in Kalapahar.
