Every year on December 2nd, Asom Divas or Assam Day (অসম দিৱস) is observed to commemorate Chalong Sukapha’s reign. Asom Divas is a regional public holiday observed in the Indian state of Assam on December 2. This special day, also known as Sukaphaa Divas, commemorates the arrival of the Ahom empire’s first king in Assam. Assamese people commemorate the great king Swargadeo Chaolung Sukaphaa on this day.

The Assam government has designated Asom Divas to commemorate the reign of the 13th century king and founder of the Ahom dynasty.

Sukaphaa is remembered by his people as a strong, courageous, and bold leader who played a pivotal role in uniting Assam’s various indigenous ethnic groups. Sukaphaa is said to have arrived in Namrup, Assam, on this day in 1228. As a result, the date of his arrival, December 2, is considered the founding date of the Ahom Kingdom.
